“Neurodivergent” and “special needs” often describe the same families, just with different language; neurodivergent is the more current, preferred term. What matters most isn’t the label, it’s making sure a special needs trust is in place before the child turns 18, so they can keep receiving benefits without losing eligibility.
It’s now imperative that we use proper labels when classifying families. So, the word “neurodivergent” is politically acceptable, but some people know it as special needs. Regardless of either definition, the bottom line is a family that has neurodivergent tendencies needs help. The most important thing to keep in mind is before the child turns 18, a special needs trust needs to be put into place to protect the child (or adult child), so they can continue getting the services that they’re eligible for without losing health insurance or financial aid.
